The Knowns

There is an old saying that there are three types of knowns:

1) That which we know, and we know it.

2) That which we don’t know, but we know we don’t know it.

3) That which we don’t know, and we don’t know that we don’t know it.

In my view the most dangerous one is number 3. When we make decisions believing we know all that’s necessary to make a good decision but are in fact lacking information without being aware of its existence and therefore value, we are operating on assumptions. Assumptions are sometimes of use but failing to identify real gaps in our knowledge and know they exist precludes the ability to mitigate let alone avoid mistakes.
